Robert Ssempijja is working in one city on a performance about another. In Hamburg he thinks of Kampala (Uganda), where he grew up. Kampala is a city that, unlike the place where he resides, was not built for the people who live there. Kampala was conceived, designed, and shaped as a segregated city.
What does it mean to come home to, to be at home in, a city that was shaped by an oppressor? How does one create a city that truly embraces its inhabitants?
Alienation III is part of a larger research project that includes a film, installation, research paper, and now too, a choreographic work.
