His greatgreat great great great great great great grandparents left the banks of the Munzur River in Turkish Kurdistan. They bid farewell to their sacred river, valley, and mountains. They detached themselves from their beloved landscape and its community so deeply connected to nature.
The step taken by his ancestors must have left a strong impression on the family of Hüseyin Umaysiz. Many generations have passed down the story of their departure. And perhaps, they also passed on the desire to return one day. Now, 450 years later, Hüseyin set foot in the valley – and was shocked. The area is in bad shape.
What to do? Hüseyin begins at a beginning. He heard about the tradition of making bread and yogurt with yeast from the river. A good first step, he thought. He wants to learn how to do it too. Together with those around him, he searches for a way to revive the valley through yeast, bread, and yogurt.
Hüseyin will work in the valley. He will conduct preliminary research and offer workshops to rediscover the yeast. Cinematographer Yuksel Cilingir from Brussels will capture the process on film.
