Once, footage circulated that someone secretly recorded in a factory of a fast-food giant. It showed a long pink strand, a sausage-like substance, being extruded from a machine. The stuff, the pulp, the worm, the sludge, the churro— was then mechanically sliced, flattened, and powdered. This pink paste, as it turned out, formed the core of the crispy chicken schnitzels served across counters worldwide in boxes of styrofoam.
“This thick fog binds us together and gives us hope. Apocalyptic hope.” A voice speaks in Listening to the hum of distant machinery by artist collective Numina Gneisspecker which was founded by Sjoerd Leijten and Stijn Verhoeff. On a truck equipped with two cameras, each pointing in opposite directions along the road, Numina drove through the ports of Antwerp and Rotterdam. Listening to the hum of distant machinery takes us through this murky landscape. The installation can be visited on September 19 at The Image Generator in Antwerp.
