blue is an agreement june

Have you ever looked into your own eyes for a long time? Up close, in the mirror.

I’m doing it now. Right now. I have green eyes. That is: from a distance, they appear green. I’m staring at the iris of my right eye and here I’m seeing something else.

The striations of the iris, the rainbow membrane, are arranged in a circle, radiating from the hole in the center toward a black outer edge that, upon closer inspection, isn’t really black at all. I mean: not clearly defined, not sharp. It’s a layering of rings in a jelly. And the lines running from inside to out, the lines of color, are layered too; floors, channels in the tissue of the eye. The green of my eye is the result of nearly transparent layers of gray, blue, and ochre yellow coming together.

Vinny Jones:

This research came from the realization that it is possible to change the perceived colour of the sky by changing the colour of the frame through which it is seen. This simple but profound experience led me to reflect on how framing shapes our ways of seeing and being in the world. If the content is not only held, but shaped by the frame; can we change the story by changing the frame?

In June and July, Vinny Jones will be in residence at Workspace Brussels and Kaai Theater. From June 23 onward, she frames and reframes blue, sky, interpretation, and story into Blue is an Agreement. Shaly Lopez and Rita Hoofwijk are co-thinkers in this process.
