Robert Ssempijja works in one city on a performance about another. From Hamburg, he thinks of Kampala (Uganda), where he grew up and still lives. Kampala is a city that, in contrast to where he resides, was not designed for the people living there. Kampala was conceived, planned, and shaped as a segregated city.
What does it mean to return home, to be home, in a city shaped by an oppressor? How do you create a city that embraces its inhabitants?
Ssempijja is residing at the K3 Center for Choreography in Hamburg until April 2025. On March 20, 22, and 23, he will there present his latest work: Alienation III. This choreography is part of a larger research project, which also includes a film, installation, research paper, and now this choreographic work.
