Soundings february 2026

How to feel like oneself again

A cup of chamomile tea and a fleece blanket on the couch. Curtains closed. Hot water bottle against the lower back. Feet up. Headphones on. Ahhh. There it is: the Eems-scan, sonic sausage of International Maritime Radio Communication.

Krtkggggggg
Good day, please pass very slowly at the bridge ahead due to drilling conditions
Kraagh ghraaaaak tik
Langsam vorbei fahren bitte
Ja ja ich mach das

A sound performance by people who are not performing.

How many persons on board
With six persons thank you

Together they maneuver colossal ships around a corner at Eemshaven; from the Wadden Sea into the Eems, then into the round inland waters of the Dollard. The necessity of lining up such a ship correctly is enormous. They don’t argue over the radio or anything like that. They simply can’t. Not in the business of International Maritime Radio Communication.

Free intermission we have emergency anchorage
Please keep your good clearance and have a good watch
Das ist verstanden
Ja alles klar

This non-performance is durational. Endless conversations take place between shore and ship, each with a jittery rhythm of silence, noise, and speech.

Haben sie uns angerufen?
Nein
tzzzzzzzzzzzzzzztkgggg

From February 4 to 6, Rita Hoofwijk and Theun Mosk are in residence at Fort Ruimtetijd in Haarlem. They are working with Robert Wilson on Soundings, which will permeate the Groningen landscape with installations this summer. One of the installations involves a connection between the Groninger Museum and an empty space in Eemshaven.
