Alienation III

Alienation III is a new choreographic work by artist Sylar Robert Ssempijja. He creates a performance about one city while working in another. From Hamburg, he reflects on Kampala, Uganda. Ssempijja grew up in Kampala and questions its status quo. Unlike the city where he currently resides, Kampala is not built for the people who live there. It was conceived, designed, and shaped as a segregated city. What does it mean to return home, to be at home, in a city shaped by an oppressor? Is it possible to redefine what it means to belong somewhere?

Until April 2025, Ssempijja is in residence at the K3 Center for Choreography in Hamburg. Alienation III is the final chapter of his research project, which includes a film, installation, research paper, and now this choreographic work.
